This evening a memorial football match will take place at Cinder Lane (7.30pm) with all spectators welcome. Here’s the story behind it:
In 2009 Cpl Steve Johnston was tragically killed in a motorbike accident in Carterton. He was part of the Movements trade in the RAF and since his death we have organised an annual football match in his memory.
A keen footballer himself, he would enjoy the banter before, during and after the game with the format being under 30’s v over 30’s. The majority of those who knew Stevie are now firmly on the wrong side of 30!!
This year the organisers of the event approached Dave Bartlett, the vice-chairman of Fairford Town Football Club. A member of the Movements trade himself, he was more than happy to help. Fairford Town FC have already been involved with the Movements trade football as they have provided two full football kits for the new season.
The club have agreed to provide the pitch, changing rooms, bar and kitchen for the event and we couldn’t thank them enough for their hospitality.
We truly appreciate all of their help leading up to this year’s event and hope to make Steve proud of this achievement within the local community.
