A new-look Fairford Town side turned in a composed performance on Tuesday evening as they wrapped up their pre-season campaign with a 5-1 home win.
Manager Jody Bevan will have been pleased with several aspects of the display, as a raft of new signings and several trialists impressed. Shortwood fielded a young-line-up but one that was full of energy and kept going for the 90.
Josh Jones, who played 26 times for Highworth Town last season, saw his free-kick strike the post leaving Dan Bailey the simple task of heading home the opener.
It was soon 2-0 with arguably the goal of the game. An arrowed ball through from captain Lee Smith found rampaging right-back John Watson whose sublime first touch on the run provided the opportunity to lift the ball over the advancing ‘keeper.
Going in 2-0 at the break, Fairford extended their advantage with Bailey hitting his second of the night before Smith volleyed home superbly following an excellent ball from centre-back Nathan Hawkins.
Substitute Ben Lodge then headed home the fifth following an excellent driven cross from Bailey, before the impressive Dan King fired home at the back post for the visitors.
Fairford can now focus on the league opener this Saturday – an altogether different proposition as much-fancied Wantage Town visit Cinder Lane (3pm).
