FAIRFORD Town secured their first win of the season thanks to a determined team display against Tuffley Rovers, with Lee Smith’s ninth goal of the campaign sealing the points.
Both sides made a bright start to the game but it was the hosts who broke the deadlock. A loose ball on the edge of the box was met by Jamie Reid who was on hand to power home his first goal in Reds’ colours.
It could have been two shortly after as Liam Gale’s corner was headed across the face of goal by Evesham loanee James Campbell. Gale then tried his luck with a 40-yard effort which was held under his own bar by captain Dave Evans.
Smith then had an opportunity on the edge of the box but his curling effort was sent wide as Fairford captain Josh Morse and Campbell had further chances before the break.
Before the hour Campbell struck a low effort narrowly wide as the chances continued to come for the home side before new signing Shane Bumphrey came off the bench with 20 minutes remaining.
The visitors struck with 13 minutes remaining as ball from former Swindon youngster Danny Wallington set Warren Mann free on the right, and his low cross was met at the near post by Brett James.
However, Fairford kept going and created further chances before the winner arrived. In the 90th minute some neat interplay on the edge of the box found Smith who struck his ninth goal of the campaign.
