Report: Missed Chances Cost Cup Exit

FAIRFORD Town made an early exit from the Emirates FA Cup after a 5-1 extra preliminary round replay defeat at Longlevens on Tuesday evening.

After Jason Milhench swept the visitors into a fourth minute lead, it looked as though it would be the Cinder Lane side who had the upper hand, but the hosts came back with vengeance and wrapped up a 5-1 win after a late second half flurry.

Midfielder Dave Merrick levelled the game up on 16 minutes with a superb curling effort past Ben Mitchell. Striker Brad Martin then curled in a similar effort six minutes before the break as the game turned on its head.

Jody Bevan had seen his side enjoy plenty of first half possession with several chances going begging in the opening 45 minutes, with striker Lee Smith being denied by the excellent Ashley Wintle in the home goal.

The visitors were made to pay when Merrick grabbed his second of the night after a defensive slip to put the hosts further in front.

Longlevens made it 4-1 with substitute Jay Kennedy sliding home from close range on 78 minutes. And when Martin latched onto a through ball three minutes from time, he added the seal on a 5-1 score line to set up a tie at Hanwell Town on Saturday 19 August.

Fairford had enjoyed 54% possession and registered 17 shots during what was an entertaining encounter, but were left to rue missed opportunities against a resolute and unified Longlevens outfit.
