CHRIS Smith believes the facilities at Fairford Town will help prepare the players for the 2017/18 season.
The Reds’ squad returned for pre-season training on Tuesday night with sessions taking place on the club’s five-acre training field, separate from the first team pitch.
“I was chuffed to bits to come in and see that, it’s fantastic,” said Smith, who lists Forest Green Rovers and Weston-Super-Mare on his coaching CV.
“When I came and had a look around the main pitch looked in good condition, but to go through and see the training area was a godsend to be honest.
“It allows us to get some really good training sessions under our belts and for the level of football we are at, it’s a real asset.”
With the first pre-season now underway, Smith outlined his thoughts on the opening week.
“The lads came in Tuesday for the first time and we had good numbers with around 25 players there.
“They seem like a great group and obviously have that winning habit from last season, the lads were nice and vocal and it was a lively session. We didn’t overdo it on Tuesday but they were back in on Thursday and got some more work done.
“In terms of the side we’d love to keep what was here last season because they have that winning habit and momentum is important. However, I know what football’s like and realistically we will lose a few and add a few.
“It would be great if the majority of the squad can make the step up to the Hellenic Premier Division together, but we are looking to add two or three players to the squad with experience at an even higher level to help things along.”
Fairford Town kick-off their pre-season campaign on Friday 7th July v Shortwood United. Free entry for all at Cinder Lane (7.30pm KO).
